Packaged Terminal Air Conditioners (PTACs), also known as packaged Terminal Heat Pumps (PTHP), are a special type of HVAC system that can cover the air conditioning demands of large areas. The ideal all-in-one solution to artificially altering the temperature of any room. These air conditioning units have the ability to cool air as well as heat air.
PTAC heat pumps come in many different sizes. The primary way to analyze a PTAC heat pump’s ability to cool or heat the surrounding area is by measuring its BTU count. BTU stands for British Thermal Units, which are one of the most common units used to measure heat energy.
The larger the area you’re trying to cool, the more BTUs your PTAC heat pump system should contain. If the area is between 150 and 450 square feet, a BTU count of between 5000 and 10,000 should suffice. However, if the area’s size is between 450 and 800 square feet, you may need a PTAC heat pump that contains between 10,000 and 15,000 BTUs.
For larger areas, you will need to install more than one PTAC heat pump because there are no PTACs that contain enough BTUs within one system to address the air conditioning needs of such a large area without some added help.
PTAC heat pumps come in smaller sizes, too, though. The heat pump mini split is an excellent example of this. Such systems typically have fewer BTUs and are made to cover relatively smaller areas.
Split systems comprise of indoor and outdoor units that function in synchroneity. The exterior component includes a compressor, also known as a condenser, whereas the internal component consists of an air handler. Air handlers are in charge of the distribution of heated or cooled air.
Split PTAC systems are usually ductless, and many modern versions allow for the attachment of several indoor air handler components to a singular air condenser that is placed outside.
Due to the presence of multiple indoor air handler components, you can easily change the temperature within each room or area section as you please. Unlike traditional PTAC heat pumps, split systems have this unique function, hence ultimately allowing for more flexible temperature controls from the same external system.
This system also helps you save up on energy and electricity costs! The use of a single outdoor component eliminates the need for multiple complete PTAC systems. For this reason, split systems have become extremely popular in recent times. They can sometimes cost more than a PTAC system but will ultimately help you save big bucks in the long run. Not to mention, these systems also allow you the ability to choose any temperature you prefer for each room!
